Course Overview:

Almost one million businesses and individuals file bankruptcies annually in the United States. Although bankruptcies filed by customers are a challenge for any business, they present a special type of challenge for utilities due to the necessity of their services to consumers. Utilities must find a balance between following the laws as they relate to bankruptcy while being responsive to their customers and limiting the exposure to revenue loss. This course covers all the basic information relating to bankruptcies that utility employees need.

Course Objectives:

  • Defining bankruptcy
  • Understanding the five types of bankruptcies
  • Basic bankruptcy terminology
  • Current bankruptcy law (Title 11 US Code)
  • Debtor and creditor rights under bankruptcy
  • How utility bills are treated under bankruptcy
  • A step-by-step procedural guide
  • Ensuring policies, bylaws, and procedures are synced

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch, as well as morning and afternoon breaks, will be provided.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted, with full refund, if request is made at least 30 days prior to the course. Within 30 days, fees are as follows: 15-29 days, $100; 1-14 days or "no show," 100 percent of registration fee. When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling. NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions.

Continuing Hours:

This course qualifies for six continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
